Genzyme Oncology believes that the most successful cancer vaccines will be those that activate a cellular immune response directed at the tumor. Its program features two types of investigational vaccines for generating a tumor-specific cellular immune response: patient-specific and antigen-specific.

Genzyme Oncology is pursuing multiple approaches to antiangiogenesis, the treatment of cancer by cutting off its blood supply. It believes that antiangiogenesis offers the potential for therapies that are likely to cause fewer side effects or generate drug resistance and could be used to treat cancer patients for longer periods of time. Genzyme Oncology is combining the power of genomics with biotechnology to create breakthrough cancer products. Using proprietary discovery platforms, Genzyme Oncology is focused on developing therapeutic vaccines that stimulate the immune system to find and destroy cancer cells, and on angiogenesis inhibitors that cut off the blood supply to tumors.

Genzyme Oncology utilizes powerful discovery platforms that support its programs, add to its extensive intellectual property portfolio, and increase its ability to attract strategic partners and generate revenue. The product development program includes gene discovery, gene therapy, small molecule drug discovery, and protein therapeutic efforts.
