Genzyme reaches financial break-even point. Seventy-five percent of revenues are generated by product sales.

Genzyme’s initial public offering raises $27.4 million and the company has a valuation of over $83 million.

1987

Raises $10 million through an R&D limited partnership to fund the development of Ceredase® (alglucerase injection), for the treatment of Gaucher disease.

1989

Raises $36.7 million through a R&D limited partnership (Genzyme Development Partners) to fund the clinical development of four HA-based products.

Raises $39.1 million through a public equity offering of 2,990,000 shares of common stock.

1990

Sells 44 percent of subsidiary IG Laboratories in an IPO, raising $14.1 million.

Forms Neozyme I, raising $47.3 million to fund R&D of six products, representing many of Genzyme's business areas.

1991

Sells interest in GENETRAK Systems for $10 million to partner Amoco Biotechnology Company.

Raises $143 million in one of the largest biotechnology public offerings ever.

Places $100 million principal amount of convertible subordinated notes with private investors to yield 6.75 percent due October 2001.

1992

Forms Neozyme II, raising $85 million to fund cystic fibrosis research and development.

Purchases four research programs from Neozyme I for $49 million: CFTR, Thyrogen® (thyrotropin alfa for injection), diagnostics for direct cholesterol testing, and synthetic phospholipids.

1993

Genzyme Transgenics completes an IPO; Genzyme's ownership is approximately 73 percent, raising $10.6 million.

1994

Genzyme Tissue Repair is formed and begins trading as the first tracking stock in the biotechnology industry, along with Genzyme General.

1995

Genzyme Tissue Repair raises over $42 million in a public offering.

Genzyme General raises $141 million in a public offering.

Genzyme buys back outstanding public shares of IG Labs.

1996

Genzyme Genetics sells its identity testing services laboratory, Genetic Design Inc.

Genzyme redeems all of the company's outstanding 6.75 percent convertible subordinated notes in the principal amount of $100 million.

Genzyme General common stock splits 2-for-1 in July.

1998

Genzyme Molecular Oncology stock begins trading on November 16.

Genzyme General sells $250 million aggregate principal amount of 5.25 percent convertible subordinated notes due 2005 in private placement.

Genzyme establishes financing plan to provide up to $66 million to develop Genzyme Tissue Repair’s product portfolio.

Genzyme Pharmaceuticals sells its fine chemicals business.

1999

Genzyme Tissue Repair announces the complete conversion of a $13 million private placement convertible note.

2000

Genzyme Molecular Oncology and Purdue Pharma L.P. announce a cancer antigen discovery and licensing agreement with a potential to provide more than $330 million in payments.

Genzyme Biosurgery is formed and stock begins trading on the NASDAQ National market under the symbol GZBX on December 19, 2000.

2001

Genzyme issues notes in a private placement of $575 million, the largest biotechnology offering ever by a U.S. issuer.

Two-for-one split of Genzyme General common stock on June 4, increases the number of outstanding shares of Genzyme General stock to approximately 194 million.

Genzyme General redeems all of the outstanding 5.25 percent convertible notes in the principal amount of $250 million.

Genzyme General ends year with market capitalization of $13 billion and over $1 billion in cash.

2002

Genzyme General revenues topped $1 billion for the first time in the division’s history.

2003

Genzyme eliminates its tracking stock structure, effective July 1.

Teleflex acquires the Genzyme cardiothoracic devices business in exchange for $32.4 million in cash and approximately $8 million in assumed trade obligations.

Genzyme acquires a leading molecular genetics and cytogenetics laboratory business.

Genzyme acquires SangStat Medical Corporation.
