Diversity: Leadership
Leadership and Diversity To be an effective leader at Genzyme is to value differences. Our leaders promote and develop ways to reap the benefits of the diversity of perspectives in our workforce. We value diversity because it sparks collaboration and innovation. The importance of taking initiative is fundamental to leadership at Genzyme. Genzyme's leaders intentionally seek input from a diverse set of people representing various functions and professional disciplines to shape our future direction and manage our day- to-day business. Meet Cecilia, one of many Genzyme leaders Cecilia is director of the international financial planning and analysis group at Genzyme. Her team functions as the liaison between Genzyme’s international offices and the corporate finance team in the United States for items such as budget planning and forecasting. A native of Argentina, Cecilia came to the United States in 2000 to pursue an MBA, with intentions of returning home upon completion. But when an interesting job at Genzyme caught her eye in 2002, she couldn’t resist applying and has been working at the company ever since.
During my interviews, I felt that I had a great sense about what the company was all about. The passion that people spoke with was amazing. I remember thinking, either they are all very well-trained on the same messages or are truly passionate about what they do. Now that I work here, I know it’s the latter. Q. What do you like most about your job? A. I have the opportunity to work with people from all over the world and greatly enjoy the variety and diversity that is Genzyme. The company keeps growing and expanding, but still has the same core values and focus on patients that I noticed during my interview. Even though my responsibilities are within finance, I enjoy the work that I do and think it’s great to work for a company that has a bigger purpose. Q. What advice do you have for young women? A. Keep your options open. Don’t stick to one particular path because you just don’t know where life will take you. I never thought I would be working at a biotechnology company in the United States, but here I am and I love what I do. Don’t limit your options and always keep an eye open for new opportunities. Stay optimistic and always give 100 percent. |
