Work and Life Balance

Full-time employees are those who are regularly scheduled to work 40 hours per week, and receive the full benefits described below. Employees working 20-39 hours per week receive these benefits on a prorated basis, unless otherwise specified.

Paid Time Off

Vacation

Full-time employees accrue vacation at the rate of three weeks per year during their first four years at Genzyme. Starting on the fourth anniversary, vacation time is accrued at four weeks per year. There is no waiting period before they are eligible to use accrued vacation time.

Sick Time

Full-time employees may take up to seven paid sick days (prorated if hired June or after) per calendar year, if they or a member of their family becomes ill.

Employees may take as many as two of the allotted seven sick days per calendar year to handle unforeseen life emergencies. Life emergencies are defined as any short-term event in an employee's life that requires time away from work (for example, a broken furnace, taking care of a child when daycare arrangements fall through, etc.).

Holidays

Genzyme offers eleven paid holidays in 2007 (these are a combination of designated and floating holidays that vary based on the division).

Other Benefits For Family Care

Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

Employees are eligible for leave time under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) once they have worked for the company for at least 12 months (and a minimum of 1,250 hours). FMLA entitles them to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected time off for specific family and medical reasons. The leave may be used for childbirth, placement of a child for adoption or foster care, to care for an immediate family member (spouse, child, or parent) with a serious health condition, or for an employee's own personal serious health condition.

Parental Leave

Full-time employees may take up to five days of paid parenting leave for the birth or care of the employee's newborn child. The paid parenting leave days do not need to be consecutive.

Adoption Leave

Full-time employees are eligible for adoption leave, which provides the primary caregiver eight weeks of paid time off to care for a newly adopted child.

Dependent Care Resource and Referral Service

Through our employee assistance program provider, employees can access a service to help with locating and selecting childcare solutions and meeting the needs of elders in your family. The services include initial assessment, counseling, referral and follow up to ensure your needs are being met.
