Work and Life Balance

All U.S. employees who work at least 20 hours per week are eligible for the following health and welfare benefits:

Health Insurance Plans

Employees and their families can be covered by Genzyme Group Plans. Eligible dependents include, spouse, same and opposite sex domestic partners, and dependent children, including eligible children of domestic partners.

Cost of coverage: Genzyme contributes approximately 80 percent towards the cost of medical and dental plan coverage, and employees contribute the remainder, through convenient payroll deductions, using pre-tax dollars.

Prescription and vision care coverage is provided with all of the medical plans described below.

Medical Plans

Genzyme's vision is to be a leader in developing and providing health care services and products to meet unmet medical needs. Ensuring that our employees and their dependents have the best choices in medical insurance coverage is our commitment as a diversified health care company. The plans available to employees and their eligible dependents include:

Blue Cross Blue Shield National PPO Plan - Available at all locations

The Blue Cross Blue Shield National PPO Plan offers the choice of obtaining medical and vision care services through a nationwide network of pre-selected physicians, hospitals, and other providers. Most routine services require a $15 co-payment or are covered at a 90 percent coinsurance level. Hospitalization is covered at 90 percent. No deductibles are required for services obtained inside the Blue Cross Blue Shield National network. Services may be obtained outside of the network as well; however, the cost is higher in the form of deductibles and coinsurance, to the employee.

BCBS 100 (In-network Plan) - Available to employees working outside of Massachusetts

The BCBS Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) offers the opportunity to obtain medical coverage from a comprehensive network of physicians and hospitals located outside of Massachusetts. Most services require a $15 co-payment. Hospitalization is covered at 100 percent after $150 co-pay.

Tufts Health EPO Plan - Available to employees working in Massachusetts

The Tufts Health Plan Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) offers the opportunity to obtain medical coverage from a comprehensive network of physicians and hospitals located primarily in Massachusetts. Most services require a $15 co-payment. Hospitalization is covered at 100 percent after $150 co-pay.

Dental Plan

Dental plan participants at Genzyme have access to the DeltaUSA network of dentists, which is the nation's largest dental provider network. Care received from a DeltaUSA dentist will result in lower out of pocket costs. The dental plan also provides coverage for care received from a dentist who does not participate in the DeltaUSA network, for higher out of pocket cost to the employee.

Disability Plans

Short-Term Disability

Short-term Disability (STD) coverage is an income replacement benefit for eligible employees who are unable to work due to a non-work related illness/injury (i.e., maternity, surgery, accidents, etc.). Eligible employees may receive benefits up to the equivalent of 13 weeks. STD benefits consist of 100 percent of base pay up to 8 weeks, and 80 percent of base pay up to an additional five weeks (a waiting period of five consecutive days of disability applies). The STD benefit runs concurrent with the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

Long-Term Disability Insurance

The Long-term Disability (LTD) plan provides eligible employees with a benefit equal to 60 percent of pre-disability base salary (this may vary for sales representatives) after thirteen weeks of a continuous disability. The maximum monthly benefit is $20,000.

Employees have the option of allowing Genzyme to pay 100 percent of the cost for their annual LTD premium or they may choose to pay the premium themselves using post-tax dollars, through payroll deduction. Under current tax laws, if you pay your own LTD premiums, any LTD benefits you receive will not be taxed.
