Preparing for the Future

Genzyme's more than 8,000 employees around the world are our most important assets, forming the infrastructure of knowledge and skill that is key to a long-term sustainable future.

We recognize that a truly global, sustainable future depends on people with knowledge and skill as well as on a physical infrastructure. Over 25 years, Genzyme has built a network of employees working collaboratively in locations that span the globe. These are people who can innovate, solve problems, deal flexibly with challenging and constantly changing circumstances, and persevere to deliver solutions to help patients and health-care systems.

As Genzyme has grown, our commitment to patients has inspired us to take on demanding challenges even as we mitigate risk through a portfolio approach. Our diversification also testifies to the entrepreneurial quality of our employees, who have built decentralized business units that all contribute to the company's growth. Genzyme's people have shown how effectively they can deliver as we have sustained our top and bottom lines while absorbing the impact of acquisitions.

The strength of our current pipeline is evidence of our productivity and high quality standards. In 2005, we completed more than 3,000 regulatory submissions in 75 countries as we introduced new products, expanded products to new markets, and implemented direct approvals rather than being licensed through distributors in numerous countries. We have exercised leadership in working proactively with regulatory authorities, implementing standards programs based on best practices, and developing environmentally responsible offices, labs, and manufacturing facilities.

Wide public recognition
Our people and culture have been consistently recognized for excellence. In early 2006, Fortune magazine selected Genzyme as one of the "100 Best Companies to Work For," and for three consecutive years, a worldwide survey of scientists by Science magazine has rated us one of the top 10 pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies for which to work. The Dow Jones Sustainability World Index selected Genzyme for membership in 2005 and 2006 because of our economic, environmental, and social performance.
