Gaucher Initiative

The Gaucher Initiative is a humanitarian program that provides Gaucher patients in developing countries with the enzyme replacement therapy Cerezyme, which is the standard of care for treating Gaucher disease. Patients in the program do not have access to insurance reimbursement and would otherwise not be able to obtain treatment.

The initiative is a collaborative effort between Genzyme and Project HOPE, a nonprofit humanitarian organization committed to improving health care around the world. Genzyme donates Cerezyme to Project HOPE, which distributes the product through its international infrastructure. The Gaucher Initiative is guided by an expert medical committee of six internationally respected physicians. The group makes patient treatment decisions, monitors and reviews patient progress and advises local treating physicians regarding appropriate patient care.

Since this effort began in 1999, more than 200 patients in 17 countries across Asia, Africa, Latin American and the Middle East have benefited from the program. The Gaucher Initiative not only provides Cerezyme to patients, but also increases understanding of Gaucher disease among physicians, patient advocates, and governmental organizations.
