Lorraine Duggan, Genetic Testing patient
Office manager and avid cook. After chemotherapy treatment in 2005 for stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), Lorraine was in a "wait and see" situation until learning of Genzyme's genetic test that helps identify NSCLC patients who are likely to respond to certain targeted therapies. Today, Lorraine is doing well on one of these therapies.

Benny Livingston, Hectorol/Renagel patient
Benny Livingston says he feels great in spite of undergoing hemodialysis three times a week. He has been receiving this treatment successfully since 2003. The Houston resident enjoys fishing trips to Galveston Island, seafood dinners, classic movies, and weekend visits from his five grandchildren.

Rosa Shields, Thymoglobulin patient
Volunteer and athlete. Rosa received Thymoglobulin with a liver and kidney transplant 13 years ago. She volunteers to help transplant patients at her local hospital and raise awareness of organ donation. She has won numerous medals competing in the World and Canadian Transplant Games in bowling and track-and-field events.

Gladys Slack, Campath patient
Gardener and crossword puzzle enthusiast. Diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in 2001, Gladys underwent three unsuccessful chemotherapy treatments. In 2003, she received MabCampath therapy and has had no recurrence or further treatment since then.

George Sarson, Synvisc patient
George is a lifelong distance runner. He began Synvisc treatments in 2003 after severe knee pain made it difficult even to get out of bed. After six sets of injections in four years, George is back to running 50-60 miles a week.

Sarah Baron, Renagel patient
Sarah's passion is her line of organic cotton clothes called "Pure Feeling" that she markets online. Diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease while pregnant in 1997, she has been on dialysis since 2004 and is on a wait list for a transplant. Her next goal? To open her own shop.

Ryan Clark, Myozyme patient
An energetic four-year-old, Ryan was diagnosed with Pompe disease at six months and was a patient in Myozyme clinical trials. Ryan’s father, Sean Clark, refers to Myozyme as “a miracle drug.” Pompe is now one of the diseases that will be included in newborn screening in Illinois.

Avery Monday, Fabrazyme patient
Avery is just like many nine-year-olds. He loves animals, video games and sports. A Fabry patient herself, Avery's mother found out he had the disease through testing while pregnant. Avery and his grandfather-who also has Fabry-share an avid interest in raising bearded dragon lizards.

Aimee Alexander, Seprafilm patient
Receiving Seprafilm in 2005 was a life-changing experience for Aimee. After enduring nearly 20 years of chronic abdominal pain, Aimee credits Seprafilm with making her pain-free and allowing her to live a more productive life.

Nickolas Buzaid, Clolar patient
Nick was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) at age three, and over the next 17 years endured chemotherapy, an allogeneic bone marrow transplant (BMT) and three relapses. After Nick's third relapse at age 20 in 2004, his doctors used Clolar to get him into remission for another BMT. Today, Nick is a college business major in Maryland.

Melanie Talwar-Coles, Alemtuzumab patient
Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 1998 at age 23, Melanie quickly became dependent on others in her daily life. She was among the first to be enrolled in alemtuzumab for MS clinical trials in 2000. Today she is married with two children and happy she is able to "live again" after treatments.

Joan Shey, Thyrogen patient
After undergoing a 1995 thyroidectomy related to thyroid cancer, Joan dealt with the effects of hypothyroidism during annual treatments for metastasies in her lungs. In 1998, Thyrogen changed that, making a major difference in the way she feels. Joan founded the Light of Life Foundation in 1997 to educate patients and promote thyroid cancer awareness.

Don Toenjes, Mozobil patient
After Don Toenjes was diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma, his wife Norma became a tireless advocate, encouraging his doctors to request compassionate use of Mozobil in his case in 2005. Mozobil enabled enough stem cells to be harvested for a successful autologous stem cell transplant.
