A Global Effort

Genzyme’s commitment to the environment is truly a global one. Our Environmental Affairs group oversees initiatives to reduce Genzyme’s impact on the environment. Recent goals have included: completing annual Environmental Performance Reports for all Genzyme buildings; reducing paper use at Genzyme by 10 percent; making improvements in our approach to monitoring and dealing with environmental issues; and promoting environmentally focused volunteer programs among employees.

Our corporate headquarters in Cambridge, MA, is a highly visible expression of our dedication to sustainability. Genzyme Center is one of the most environmentally responsible office buildings in the world, and has received the highest ranking, Platinum, from the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. Genzyme's new science and research facility in Framingham, Mass. is being constructed with green design standards. Our facilities across the rest of the world also include environmentally responsible features, such as water and energy-efficient systems.

Genzyme has created customized environmental programs to offer transportation alternatives for employees. In 2004, a shuttle bus service was launched for those who travel between several Massachusetts locations to decrease pollution, fuel use and traffic congestion. In its first full year of operation, the shuttle had nearly 4,000 employee round-trips. Other programs have been developed to encourage employees to carpool to work and to better utilize public transportation.

Genzyme encourages employee participation in volunteer activities that support natural resource preservation, such as beach clean-ups and tree planting initiatives. Genzyme’s employees have raised thousands of dollars for several environmental groups, including Mission Trails Regional Park, San Diego Audubon Society, Charles River Watershed Association, Sudbury Valley Trustees, Mystic River Watershed Association, Hackensack Riverkeeper, and Suffolk Wildlife Trust.
