At Genzyme, our commitment to the environment is a priority every day. As we work to fulfill our mission to meet unmet medical needs, we also hold ourselves accountable in all of our activities to the highest standards of environmental management. We believe that we have an obligation to support a sustainable business by reducing our impact on the environment and conserving natural resources for future generations.

Genzyme has developed an environmental management system that is applied at most facilities worldwide. This system is designed to measure environmental impact, share best practices and improve overall performance. It tracks a series of key performance indicators, including regulatory compliance, water and energy use, air emissions, chemical waste, and solid waste/recycling.

Genzyme’s commitment goes beyond compliance to programs that involve employees in the promotion of natural resource preservation. Genzyme’s Environmental Affairs group runs programs to educate employees about environmental responsibility and to raise awareness of environmental issues. The department also has a recognition program to acknowledge employees who have implemented changes that reduce the environmental impact of our operations.
