Compliance and Site Management
By tracking several key environmental performance indicators and employing a systematic process for measuring our impact, Genzyme strives not only to ensure that our manufacturing and lab facilities comply with all laws, but also with good green business practices.
What We Strive For

At Genzyme, our environmental efforts start with the basics: follow the rules. We're committed to complying fully with all environmental laws, regulations, and permits that apply to our manufacturing and laboratory sites, currently located in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and across Europe. We've developed a rigorous environmental management system to help us measure our impact and improve our performance. Modeled on ISO 14001 standards, our system is flexible enough to integrate into different sites' operations and evolve over time as requirements change.

What Is ISO 14001?

Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and recognized worldwide, ISO 14001 is a set of standards to help organizations define, measure, and manage the environmental impact their buildings or operations.

What We Measure

To track performance and help to ensure compliance, Genzyme monitors several key environmental indicators, including energy and water use, air emissions, chemical waste, and other waste/trash at our manufacturing and lab sites around the world. We track these compliance incidents not only to help make sure they get corrected individually, but also to identify areas for improvement of our overall systems. The data is professionally compiled and details are made publically available on our website.

What We've Achieved

In 2007 Genzyme set a big goal: To reduce our global greenhouse gas emissions by 25% per dollar of revenue by the end of 2012. We began a rigorous, third-party verified program to track all of our emissions to ensure that we thoroughly understood our impact on the environment. Once we determined where we could improve, we undertook a massive effort to use electricity from renewable sources, reduce waste, and implement energy efficiency measures at our sites around the world.

Thanks to the hard work and commitment of our employees, we met our greenhouse gas reduction goal by the end of 2010, two years ahead of schedule. And we continue to explore new ways to improve our environmental performance in the years to come.

The achievement of the greenhouse gas reduction target is just the beginning. We are looking to the future, and we’re eager to define our next goal.
