Our social responsibility extends to patients and communities worldwide.
At Genzyme, we believe that social responsibility is integral to our way of doing business. Our responsibility spans developing innovative products and bringing them to market, working to ensure patient access, conducting operations in an environmentally conscious way, and using our resources to improve global health. In recognition of our economic, environmental, and social performance, Genzyme has earned a place in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for the past three years. We have also been ranked repeatedly among the most generous in-kind donors by BusinessWeek surveys of corporate philanthropy. In early 2007, Genzyme was named one of the "Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World" by Innovest Strategic Value Advisors.
ACCESS TO INFORMATION AND THERAPY
Providing access to therapy involves conducting global clinical trials and regulatory filings, developing manufacturing capacity for future demand, advocating for and demonstrating the value of our products, and providing supplies on a humanitarian basis. Our humanitarian programs began in 1999 with the Gaucher Initiative in partnership with Project HOPE, which continues today in tandem with a variety of other free-drug initiatives.
Another important component of access is information and awareness. We make information about the diseases we treat available to the patient and medical communities through publications, patient registries, patient education programs, and our web-based clinical trial registry and results database.
SUPPORTING GLOBAL HEALTH AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES
We support our communities by minimizing the impact of our operations on the environment. We have created a global standard applied at all our facilities to measure environmental impact, share best practices, and improve overall environmentally sustainable performance. We also have a tradition of partnership with nonprofit organizations and schools where our facilities are located, with a focus on health and science education. In 2006, we announced the largest philanthropic gift in our 25-year history - $2 million to support a new life sciences initiative at the Museum of Science, Boston.
Genzyme is developing an innovative approach to helping improve global health through our Humanitarian Assistance for Neglected Diseases (HAND) initiative. In partnership with other organizations, we seek to be a catalyst in discovering and developing treatments for devastating world health problems that do not provide commercial opportunities for Genzyme. In 2006, we announced and expanded our collaboration with the Medicines for Malaria Ventures and the Broad Institute around new therapeutic candidates for malaria and partnered with the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative on developing an improved treatment for African sleeping sickness.
