GENZYME'S LEADERSHIP
Our testing services and diagnostics businesses help ensure that the right therapy gets to the right patient as quickly as possible, and that no patient is subjected to unnecessary treatment. These businesses complement our therapeutics, and we expect this relationship to deepen over time.
REPRODUCTIVE AND ONCOLOGY TESTING
Genzyme continued to lead the reproductive testing market in 2006. By adding a new maternal screening option, we now offer the most extensive menu of six serum screening options to physicians and patients. We also expanded our cystic fibrosis screening panel by adding an assay that allows the full sequencing of the CF gene. This new diagnostic tool detects 98 percent of the more than 1,200 disease-causing mutations. We supported the launch of Myozyme with a non-invasive test for Pompe disease that cuts diagnosis time by nearly 75 percent so that treatment, if warranted, can begin as early as possible.
In oncology, we introduced six new personalized medicine tests across a range of cancer types, including one in B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a disease for which we market a therapeutic product. We have also continued to build our oncology clinical trials business to aid drug development with companion diagnostic and personalized medicine support services. Genzyme has one of the top U.S. testing laboratories offering complex testing services and the nation's largest network of board-certified genetic counselors.
DIAGNOSTIC PRODUCTS
Our diagnostic testing unit focuses on three major product lines: tests delivered outside the centralized laboratory with the goal of supporting rapid diagnosis and targeted treatment, raw materials and kits serving the clinical chemistry laboratory, and infectious disease products serving both the central and decentralized laboratory market segments.
Among our accomplishments in 2006 was the launch of a rapid flu test, which distinguishes both A and B toxins, in the United States and Europe. Equal Diagnostics, which we acquired in mid-2005, exceeded expectations for its first full-year contribution, as we leveraged its strong distribution network for clinical chemistry reagents to the clinical laboratory. We remain the premier supply source for direct HDL and LDL cholesterol tests in Europe and the United States.
We are collaborating closely with the tolevamer team to create a Clostridium difficile rapid test that identifies both A and B toxins, which we plan to launch in 2007. We also expect to introduce rapid test products for the detection of yeast infections and respiratory syncytial virus in 2007.
Partnering with our therapeutics and pharmaceuticals businesses, diagnostics is also supporting the introduction of newborn screening tests for genetic disorders, targeted for launch in 2007. The first screening products include tests to identify Fabry, Gaucher, Krabbe, Niemann Pick, and Pompe diseases.
